Erich W. Pollak was born in Vienna, Austria to parents of Polish descent. He studied medicine at the University of Vienna and received his degree in 1927. After working for a time as a pediatrician in Vienna, he emigrated to the United States in 1938, where he worked as an intern at New York City's Bellevue Hospital
Soon after, he took a position at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute where he was one of the first analysts to be trained in the technique of child analysis by Melanie Klein. He later became director of the New York Psychoanalytic Institute and president of the Psychoanalytic Association of America.
